We’ll depart from Florence and head directly to Bologna, a city known for its stunning churches, overarching towers, and vibrant piazzas. We’ll kick off the day with a walking tour to all the main attractions, like Le Due Torri and Piazza Maggiore, before breaking for lunch (Bologna, nicknamed “La Grassa” boasts some of the most delectable food and wine in Italy).
Next, we’ll make our way to FICO Eataly World. With their grand opening Nov 15, 2017, the world’s first food-themed expo is getting global press mentions and endless social media love, and now’s your chance to experience why! What better way to start your semester abroad in Italy than indulging in a visit to this 20-acre complex to watch master chefs create handmade pasta, taste truffles in Truffle Land or sample Italy’s favorite dessert, tiramisu (even sweeter with us because it’s free)!
With 45 restaurants and food trucks to visit, you’ll never be ready to ask for the check. There are a limited number of spots available for this free day trip, so be sure to sign up now to confirm your seat.
The trip departs Florence from the Santa Maria Novella train station at 8:30 AM. The meeting point is in the International Ticketing Hall opposite tracks 8 and 9. Please meet your trip leader 30 minutes prior to departure. We will travel by coach bus from Florence to Bologna.
We will arrive in downtown Bologna at approximately 10 AM for a walking tour of the city's main attractions with free time to explore and grab a light lunch. Bologna is the capital and largest city of the Emilia-Romagna Region in Northern Italy. Bologna is renowned for its culinary tradition. This is where the famous Bolognese sauce was created, a meat-based pasta sauce that in Italy is called ragù. Make sure you sample some before heading back to Florence.
We will depart Bologna at approximately 1 PM to leave for FICO Eataly World. Welcome the Disneyland of Italian cuisine! This new Italian food-themed park opened Nov. 15 in Bologna, Italy and is like the famous Eataly markets around the United States — but on steroids. Eataly World has more than 45 trattorias, Michelin-starred restaurants, bistros, street-food kiosks and a 30,000-square-foot market space sells things like formaggio (cheese), cured meats and desserts. In the theme-park there are farms and factories are dedicated to educating visitors on how food is harvested and manufactured, like how olive oil is pressed. Not only can you buy and eat authentic, handmade pasta, but you can also sign up for workshops where you can learn how to make fresh pasta and other italian classics. The complex is so large, there are bikes you can take to explore the many acres! You'll have the afternoon to explore this wonderful complex before heading back to Florence.
We’ll arrive back in Firenze by around 7 PM.
